SUIKERUNIE PROGRESS REPORT

SUIKERUNIE PROGRESS REPORT
4 May 2016 Carlo Timmerman

It has been a few weeks since we’ve last visited the Suikerunie terrain to check up on the progress of the workforce that’s building the Festival area. We were at the kick-off and heard Oltman Aukema talk about several things that he has been planning for the coming months. They started off with clearing the road towards the terrain itself and making sure that any future infrastructural plans wouldn’t find any obstacles when coming to realisation.

Since then, the terrain has undergone a metamorphosis. There are several sub-projects running that are part of the whole festival area build.

One of the bigger undertakings right now is the creation of the Forest stage. The team has proceeded to create pathways all throughout in an outer circle of the woods. They then proceeded to clear an inner circular area as big as 20 meters, where they’ve removed all of the small weeds and bushes. After that, they cut down all of the trees to a height of 1 meter high. These tree stumps are going to be the foundation of the dance floor. And that’s not all! The DJ booth is going to be way up in the trees! It will create a surreal and magical feeling when it all comes together.

Another big thing that’s happening is the installation of a couple of solar panels with battery pack! This will power everything that’s needed for the crew to be able to work properly. Think about powering the fridge, coffee machine, power tools and having access to power through various installed plugs. More on this project later!

A different project that’s in progress is the creation of our own food supply! This is still in its first phase, where different berries are being grown. They have made cuttings of the different berry strains (red, blue and elderberries) to create their own different harvests. We’ll see how it’s going to turn out!

Another cool thing that has been delivered is special growing bins where the team can grow vegetables. This is also still in the first phase, where they have to mix several types of soil to create the perfect growing environment. We’ll keep you updated on its progress!

But it’s not just hard labour. The team members work hard and play hard! When the day is coming to an end, there is also room for some relaxation (often coupled with a beer or two). The atmosphere is really quite something. They’re not only being taught by Oltman on working with the various projects, but they also help each other out with the knowledge they have! Some of the volunteers have experience with building all sorts of things. Others have great ideas on how to provide the terrain of green sustainable energy. We’ll update you as this progresses.

That’s all for now folks! We’ll get back to you with more news on these projects in some time!
